Bagalkot

Bagalkot district is an administrative district in the Indian state of Karnataka.
History Of Bagalkot District :
Bāgalkot district headquarters is located in the town of Bagalkote. The district is located in northern Karnataka and borders Belgaum, Gadag,Koppal, Raichur and Bijapur. The new Bagalkote district was carved out of Bijapur in 1997 via Government of Karnataka directive Notification RD 42 LRD 87 Part III.[1]Historically, Bagalkote was the capital of the Chalukyan Empire of South India under Pulakesi I, who conquered the district in 550 CE. Bagalkot's Badami taluk remained the seat of the throne of the Chalukyas from550 CE — 753 CE, when Chalukya king Kirtivarman II was overthrown by the Rashtrakutas.
The bifurcated Bagalkote district consists of six taluks — Badami, Bagalkote, Bilagi, Hunugund, Jamakhandi and Mudhol Badami formerly known as Vatapi, is a town and headquarters of a taluk by the same name, in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. It was the regal capital of the Badami Chalukyas from 540 to 757 AD. It is famous for rock cut and other structural temples. It is located in a ravine at the foot of a rugged, red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake.It is also believed that name Badami has come from colour of its stone(badam -Almond).
Badami is famous for its sandstone cave temples called Badami Caves.
Bagalkot or Bagalkote is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. Bagalkot is the district headquarters of the Bagalkot district. It is one of the major towns in North Karnataka.According to stone inscriptions in the surrounding area, the town's name was formerly Bagadige. According to legend, the town was gifted to the Bajantries (musicians) by Ravana, the king of Lanka who ruled this area. One of the Bijapur kings is said to have presented the town to his daughter as bangle money (a tradition in which the daughter is given money to buy bangles, sarees, gold ornaments from her parents after the marriage). Consequently the place acquired the name Bagdikot, which later became Bagalkot. Bagalkot remained under successive dominions of Vijayanagar emperors, Peshwas, Hyderali of Mysore, Maratha rulers, and finally the British in 1818. In 1865, it was established as a municipality and civic amenities were provided to the residents of Bagalkot. The place was a noted centre of freedom movement and the Unification movement.Bagalkot is divided into two parts - the new Bagalkot or Navanagar and the old Bagalkot town. The construction of new town became necessary following submergence of parts of old town due to constructionof Almatti dam. Navanagar is a planned town with grid pattern layout with wide roads, parks, and other amenities.
Bagalkot is famous for its "Holi Habba" i.e. Festival of Colours. It is said that Bagalkot ranks second to Kolkata in the way it celebrates Rang Panchami.Bagalkot is famous as tourist place.
Bilagi is a town and taluka in the Bagalkote district of Karnataka, India. It is situated at a distance of 30 km from the district headquarters Bagalkote. The main occupation of people in this taluk is agriculture. Most of the farmers grow sugarcane.Bilagi contains one of the famous sugar mill called Bilagi Sugar Mills Limited
Hungund is a taluk in the northern district of Bagalkot in Karnataka, India. Major towns in the taluk are Amingad, Karadi, Hungund and Ilkal. It is the taluk which has the place Kudalasangama (ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮ) where the social reformist Basavanna attained moksha(Salvation). Hungund Taluk also contains Aihole and Pattadkal which were once under the rule of Chalukyas of Badami. Amingad is known for Amingad karadantu, a sweet dish.Hugund is famous for tourist places like Aihole and Pattadkal.
Jamakhandi is a town in Bagalkot district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It was the capital of the former princely state of Jamkhandi.The Royal Palace of Patawardhans is the main attraction of Jamkhandi town.
Some other places worth visiting in the town are: There is a legend says that Maharshi Jamadagni husband of Shri Renuka Devi stayed in the caves of Jamakhandi and meditated here.Jamkhandisurrounded by rocky hills makes it beautiful site and looks like a hole from aerial survey.
Mudhol is a town in the Bagalkot District in the Northern part of the state of Karnataka, India. It is about 60 km from the district headquarters of Bagalkot town on the left bank of the Ghataprabha River. It is famous for a breed of dog known as the Mudhol Hound.This breed is known for stamina and agility.
