Gadag

Gadag District had a population of 971,952 of which 35.21% was urban as of 2001. Population increased 13.14% in the decade 1991-2001. The District is bounded on the north by Bagalkot District, on the east by Koppal District, on the southeast by Bellary District, on the southwest by Haveri District, on the west by Dharwad District, and on the northwest by Belgaum District. Gadag District was formed in 1997, when it was split from  Dharwad District.Gadag district, the core area of Kalyani Chalukyas has many monuments (mainly Shiva temples, Jain Basadis) Kalyani Chalukyas propagated Jainism and built temples (known for architectural beauty).

Gadag district has five taluks namely Gadag-Betgeri, Ron, Shirhatti, Nargund and Mundargi.
Gadag-Betageri is a town and a city municipal council in Gadag district in the state of Karnataka, India. It is the administrative headquarters of Gadag District. The original city of Gadag and its sister city Betageri (or Betgeri) have a combined city administration. The municipality of Gadag-Betageri has a population of 172,813 and an area of 54.56 km². Kanaginahal of Gadag is the birthplace of the first co-operative socity in Asia.
The twin city municipality is situated 80 km from Dharwad and 60 km from Hubli, and lies on the Gutti-Vasco National Highway.
This is also the land of great freedom fighters like Huilgol Narayana Rao and Shankar Rao Kampli who along with other freedom fighters founded "Azad Hind Seva Dal" which contributed a lot to the nations struggle for freedom.
Ron is a panchayat town in Gadag district, North Karnataka in India. Of historical importance, the town was termed Dronapur in ancient times. The temples are believed to be constructed by the ancient architect and warrior-priest Dronacharya.

Shirahatti is a panchayat town in Gadag district in the Indian state of Karnataka.Shri Jagadguru Fakireshwar Math(Temple) is a famous religious center. Both Hindus & Muslims follow this deity; this is uniqueness of this Math.
Nargund or Naragunda is a town in Gadag district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The name Naragunda means hills of jackals. The astrologist and a Jain Sridharacharya from this town was the author of Jatakatilaka.
Nargund was ruled by the Venkat Rao of the Bhave dynasty during the late 18th century on behalf of the Maratha Peshwas of Poona. Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore subjugated it in 1778. It was attacked by Tipu Sultan in 1784. The Marathas and the Bhave family and the Pethe family (who were their accountants) were humiliated by means of brutal torture and rape at the hands of Tipu and his commanders. They were imprisoned in Mysore until their release in 1799 by the Marathas. They returned to Nargund. Nargund is also famous for its cotton crop.
Mundaragi is a municipal town in Gadag district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Mundargi is close to two district headquarters, being about 36 kilometres (22 mi) from Gadag and around 50 kilometres (31 mi) from Koppal. The name 'Mundaragi' came from the hill-station Murudagiri, meaning 'Hill of Shiva'. The river Tungabhadra flows about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) from Mundargi, and provides water for the town.
