Koppal

Koppal district is an administrative district in the state of Karnataka in India. In the past Koppal was referred to as 'Kopana Nagara'. Hampi, a World heritage center, covers some areas of Koppal District. It is situated approximately 38 km away. Anegundi, is also a famous travel destination.

History:
Koppal, now a district headquarters is ancient Kopana a major holy place of the Jainas. Palkigundu is described as the Indrakila parvata of epic fame and there is an ancient Shiva temple called the Male Malleshwara. There are two Ashokan inscriptions at Palkigundu and Gavimatha. It was the capital of a branch of Shilaharas under the Chalukya's of Kalyan. In Shivaji's times it was one of the eight prants or revenue divisions of Southern Maratha Country. During India's First War of Independence Mundargi Bheema Rao and Hammige Kenchanagouda died fighting the British here in June 1858. Kinhal 13 km away from Koppal is famous for its traditional colourful lacquerware work.

Koppal is a town in Koppal district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Koppal is surrounded on three sides by hillocks and was an important town in the history of Karnataka, popularly known as Kopana Nagar. It contains historical locations such as Koppal Fort, Gavimath and the Male Mallappa Temple and it is known as Jaina Kashi meaning sacred place for Jains, named because there were more than 72 Basadis(also called Basti)-Jain Prarthana mandir.

Gangavathi is a town and a municipal council in Koppal district in the state of Karnataka, India.Gangavathi is an important commercial centre. Since it is situated close to Tungabhadra dam. Hampi, a well known UNESCO World Heritage Site is 14 km from the town. Other places of historical importance include Anegundi, Kanakagiri, and Hemagudda. Gangavathi was one many talukas in Raichur District. When Koppal district was carved out of Raichur District, Gangavathi became part of Koppal district.Gangavathi is famous for rice cultivation, and considered the rice bowl of Karnataka. It is famous for rice milling industry.Many films have been shot in Gangavathi like China Gate, Amaanat, Nayak.Gangavathi has also received equal amount of popularity in producing sugar. Gangavathi Sugar Limited was once second biggest sugar plant in Asia. GSL (Gangavathi Sugar Limited) is located atPragathinagar village which is 10 km away from Gangavathi city on the state high way to Raichur.

Yelburga was ruled by Yerambarga dynasty during the dawn of 11th century.An edict obtained explains about Yelburga from AD 1026 to AD 1126. It was one of the last talukas during Nizam rule.

Kushtagi is a panchayat town in Koppal district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Kalalbandi is village in Kushtagi. It literally means "Stone Cart". Despite the stony ground, its economy is based on agriculture.Kushtagi is a major area of work for Samraksha ,the HIV/AIDS unit of Samuha, a registered NGO.
