Uttara Kannada

Uttara Kannada, also known as North Kanara or North Canara, is a Konkan district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is bordered by the state of Goa and Belgaum District to the north, Dharwad District and Haveri District to the east, Shimoga District and Udupi District to the south and the Arabian Sea to the west. The city of Karwar is the administrative headquarters of the district.
History :
Uttara Kannada was the home of the Kadamba kingdom from the 350 to 525. They ruled from Banavasi. After the subjugation of the Kadambas by the Chalukyas, the district came under successive rule of empires like Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagar empire.

This place is presently known as Hosapattana and is located in the town of Honnavar. Ruins of an old mosque and its minaret can still be seen in the village. The district came under the rule of Maratha Empire in the 1750s and later part of Mysore Kingdom, who ceded it to the British at the conclusion of the Fourth Mysore War in 1799. It was initilally part of Kanara district in Madras Presidency. The district was divided to North and South Kanara districts in 1859. The British finally transferred Uttara Kannada district to Bombay Presidency in 1862.After India's independence in 1947, Bombay Presidency was reconstituted as Bombay State.Significant and picturesque, the Sadashivgad fort of historical importance is now a popular tourist destination located by the Kali river bridge, which has been built at the confluence of the river and the Arabian Sea.
Uttara Kannada is devides into 11 talukas : Karwar, Ankola, Kumta,Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi,Siddapur, Yellapur,Mundgod, Haliyal, Joida
Karwar is the administrative headquarters of an eponymous taluk and of Uttara Kannada district in the Indian state of Karnataka.It was the chief town of the North Kanara district in British India.
Karwar is a seaside town situated on the banks of the Kali river which is on the west coast of the Indian peninsula. The town lies about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south of the Karnataka–Goa border and 519 kilometres (322 mi) north-west of Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka. Karwar was an ancient site of sea trade visited by the Arabs, Dutch, Portuguese, French and later the British. Ibn Battuta passed through this route during his journeys. Significant and picturesque, the historically important fort Sadashivgad is now a popular tourist destination located by the Kali river bridge at the confluence of the river and the Arabian Sea.
Ankola which is a Taluk (an administrative subdivision) is in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state, India. A small town by any standard surrounded by numerous temples. It is in line with Arabian sea. The beaches present at this place are Baskal gudda, nadibag, shedikuli, keni, Belekeri and many more. Ankola is famous for its native breed of mango called ishaad and for cashews harvesting.

Kumta a city and a taluka in the North Kanara district in the state of Karnataka, India. Kumta It is a coastal city and is about 142 km south of the city Margao and 58 km north of Bhatkal. The city lies on NH 17 running
between Panvel and Edappally and its one of the major stations along the Konkan Railway line running between Mumbai and Mangalore. The nearest international airport is Dabolim Airport (Vasco da Gama) which is 167 km away.
During the British Raj, Kumta was a part of the North Kanara district of the Bombay Presidency. Crafts made out of Carving in sandalwood is a specialty. The city came under the rule of Maratha Empire in the 1800s, who ceded it to the British at the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818. The British established Kumta city as a part of the Bombay Presidency. During the American Civil War the cotton from the southern
states that fed mills in England stopped supplying and the mills started importing a variety of cotton known as 'Kumta Hatti’ this resulted in development of Kumta port.
Honavar or Honnavar is a port town in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. The town is the headquarters of Honnavar taluk. The first ever historical reference about the Honnavar town appears in the works of the Greek author Periplus (AD 247): It was called Naour. In the 10th century text Jain Ramayana, the town is mentioned as Hanuruha Island. References about the town are also available in the works of Abu al-Fida (AD 1273-1331), an Arab geographer as well as that of Ibn Batuta who described it as the city of Hinaur.According to Ibn Batuta, the people of Honnavar were Muslims of the Shafai or Arab sect, peaceful and religious. The men were famous sea-fighters and the women were chaste and beautiful. Most of them knew the Quran by heart. Honavar, once was under the ruling of queen Chennabhairadevi  of Gerusoppa range, who is believed to have been defeated by the British.Honnavar or Onore was a notable seaport of British India, in the Uttara Kannada\North Canara district of Karnataka. It is mentioned as a place of trade as early as the 16th century and is associated with two interesting incidents in Anglo-Indian history.Honnavar has a history of having the name Honnupura  which might have been a major market and export hub for gold and related things.

Bhatkal, also known as Batecala in some Portuguese historical texts is a port town in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India 58 km from Kumta. Once ruled by Jain King Bhattakalanka and thus the name, Bhatkal town lies on NH-17 running between Mumbai and Kochi and is one of the major stations along the Konkan Railway line running between Mumbai and Mangalore. The nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport.By virtue of its strategic location, Bhatkal has a chequered history. Bhatkal witnessed the rise and fall of several dynasties and rulers. A part of Hoysala empire in 1291 to 1343, Bhatkal later fell into the hands of the Vijayanagara empire. Chola emperors under Aditya I, his son Parantaka I and successor Sundara Chola also known as Paranta Chola II initially inavaded and conquered territories in the Kannada country between Gangavadi on the Mysore plateau and Bhatkal on the Sahyadri coast 880-975 AD.
Sirsi is a city in the North Kanara district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is a hill station town with a population of around 1,20,000 people. This is the largest city in North Kanara district. The city is surrounded by lush green forest and the region is popular for a large number of waterfalls. Hubli is the nearest large city, and the main businesses around the town are mostly subsistence and agriculture based. Adike (Supari) (Areca nut) or (Betel nut) is the primary crop grown in the villages that surround the town, making it one of the major trading centres for Arecanut. The nuts grown here are transported all over India, and also exported abroad. The region is also popular for many other spices like cardamom, pepper, betel leaves and vanilla. The major food crop is paddy and rice is the staple food of the people.
Siddapur is a town and the headquarters of Siddapur taluk (administrative division) in Uttara Kannada (North Canara) district of the state of Karnataka in southern India. It is nestled among the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Mother place of Sri Kanandabe Amma Bhuvaneshwari Only the Kannadambe of Karnataka. Areca nut cultivation is the primary occupation of the people of this taluk, along with agriculture.
Yellapura is a town in the North Kanara(Uttara Kannada) district of Karnataka in the country of India. Yellapura is known as a "main road town", meaning it is a village with one main road and facilities such as telephone booths, tea serving stalls, and tire puncture repair shops. 90% of the people in Yellapura are farmers who grow Areca nuts and rice.
Mundgod is a panchayat town in Uttara Kannada district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It lies en route to Hubli from Sirsi. It is a Main road town.
Haliyal is a Panchayat town in Uttara Kannada in the Indian state of Karnataka. It can be classified as a main-road town. The NH-63 (India) highway passes through this town.
Joida is a small town in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India. The town is the headquarters of the eponymous taluk, lying in the Uttara Kannada district. Located close to Ambikanagar, Joida is also called Supa by locals. KPCL maintains the Supa Dam, which straddles the Kali River nearby.There is a substantial amount of Chardo families in this area as they had migrated due to the persecution of the Portuguese in Goa.
